Moments of Serendipity

Moments of Serendipity

“I have a passion for geometry, simplicity and contrasts. I like to play with light and shadow, to point out the finer details. I love coincidences and contradictions: a bird leaving a dead tree or an evanescent cloud behind a concrete wall. The angles of light and shade differ depending on the season, so it’s a challenge and a motivation to identify when to shoot.” Andrea Lohmann’s (b. 1978) compositions might recall the surrealist paintings of René Magritte – with familiar motifs of birds, clouds, buildings and glowing lights set against dazzling blue skies – however, the Berlin-based photographer’s inspiration comes, primarily, from the built environment: structures from the post-war era rising amongst streetlamps and pylons. A sense of spontaneity, of Henri Cartier-Bresson’s “The Decisive Moment”, is also pivotal here, as Lohmann waits for moments of serendipity: where the organic and manmade seem to cohere. annigrafie.com.
