Lucy Martin

The Preciousness of Life is a meditation on the beauty and serenity of nature married with a sense of nostalgia and family, in a series of hand-embroidered sculptural objects. Inspired by Lucy Martin’s family garden, this personal project reflects aspects of life the artist holds most dear and comprises a series of glass terrariums. The initial stages of the project began with sketches and paintings of the flowers. The hand-rendered and digitally drawn florals are translated this into stitched artwork mainly using raised work and stumpwork hand embroidery techniques. Martin combines silk shading, goldwork and tambour beading techniques (among others) to create the surface design on the petals, with the finished flowers are placed on a ground of hand-embroidered moss.
