5 Artists: Aesthetica Art Prize 2020

Be inspired by five talents from the 2020 Aesthetica Art Prize – a prestigious international award celebrating innovation and creativity. Spanning film, photography, painting and digital art, these works hold up a mirror to our world.

Andres Orozco

Andres Orozco uses lighting interventions to transform spaces – reshaping the colours and textures into ethereal tableaux. The artist alters specific built environments into otherworldly spaces that recall the aesthetics of early science-fiction cinematography.

Rhea Storr

2020’s Main Prize-winner Rhea Storr is concerned with the ability of analogue practices to speak about black and mixed-race identities. Carnival has provided fertile ground upon which to consider cultural representation, masquerade and the performance of black bodies.

Christiane Zschommler

Project Fear blocks out texts from studies about the impact of Brexit from 2015 to 2017, reducing words to geometric coloured shapes. It is a reflection of the meaninglessness misinformation and rhetoric regarding Brexit, creating abstract art from the political landscape.

Christopher Stott

Christopher Stott produces clean representational oil paintings that transform vintage objects into icons. The artist depicts a variety of antique items including appliances, books, clocks and typewriters, amongst other common instruments.

Patty Carroll

Patty Carroll has been taking photographs since the 1970s; becoming known for her use of highly intense, saturated colour. Anonymous Women comprises studio installations made for the camera, immersing viewers in a playful critique of home and excess.

The Aesthetica Art Prize is open for entries. We’re looking for artists who are redefining the parameters of contemporary art. Submit your works by 31 August. Find out more here.
