Sonny Barthley

Sonny Barthley

Sonny Barthley explores the pain and trauma of African-Caribbean people who were kidnapped and transported to the UK, through self-portraiture and body movement in a film entitled Roots. The work is in response to the Black Lives Matter movement. Barthley notes that Olaudah Equiano was an African slave who was taken by merchants from Nigeria to Kent’s Medway. Equiano’s fight for freedom and the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade was helped by his 1789 autobiographical book entitled The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano or Gustavus Vassa, The African.
