Dedicated to contemporary photography and video art, Photo Docks Art Fair launches its eighth edition on the 16 September with its private view. Established in 2007, the event provides a platform for collectors, gallerists, artists and enthusiasts to meet and discuss themes within today’s art world. Every odd year, the fair stages a solo show, whilst every even year sees a wider focus spread across a variety of contemporary works. Recognised for the rigour of its selection process, Docks Art Fair offers an engaging and specialised experience.
This year, for the first time, Docks will introduce a new viewing concept; whereby it will take the form of a traditional fair for three days, and subsequently progress into a coherent three-week exhibition. This new format enables attendees to appreciate works within a museum showcase and also examine the curatorial role of galleries. The installation and presentation of photography and digital art is a central part of the fair’s ethos.
Associated programme, Les Itinérances, stages a range of vibrant exhibitions, animations and projects in the different parts of the city and the surrounding region. Initiated in 2014, the sector promotes the work of professional and non-professional photographers with or without a performance space. Having already featured 27 exhibitions, the programme highlights the outstanding interest in photography existing across the region.
Included in the 2016 line-up is a special presentation of photography by Nikos Aliagas, selected by Docks Director Patricia Houg June, who speaks highly of the practitioner oeuvre: “Nikos brings to light people’s fragility and their singularity. The photographic print and the print of time, of laughter and tears, of work and toil, of living conditions, snapshot of a precise moment, the photographer presents us with work that is delicate and narrative.”
Docks takes place during Septembre de la Photographie, a month-long festival that returns to the city of Lyon following a four-year interval.
