Modernism Week returns to Palm Springs to celebrate mid-century architecture and design at its annual Fall Preview from 21 – 23 October and Modernism Week from 16 – 26 February 2017. Both events feature engaging lectures and film screenings combining the efforts of leading contemporary figures in design. The Fall Preview welcomes visitors to sample the 250 events and activities taking place at the main event in February the following year.
Palm Springs and the surrounding area is home to a variety of exemplary works by leading architects and designers, guests are encouraged to explore with walking guides and the Double Decker Architectural Bus Tours. Private spaces like the studio of modernist woodworker Sam Maloof will be open to visitors, as well as the North Shore Beach & Yacht Club at the Salton Sea designed by Albert Frey in 1959.
The Fall Preview and Modernism Week offer an expansive schedule, events include tours of the historic Annenberg Estate at Sunnylands and an evening at the Museum of Pinball in Banning that includes unlimited play on more than 800 machines.
Modernism Week continues to create an impact beyond the festival with its contribution to the local neighbourhood and the state. Contributions are made to local Coachella Valley organisations, preservation trusts and two aspiring architectural students are awarded scholarships.
