Surviving the Future is a project that looks at how certain circumstances, for example, terrorism, pandemics or civil unrest can change the way people want to live. The site for Adey’s design is located in Aldermaston, Berkshire next to the Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE), where they manufacture and sustain the warheads for the Trident system. On the site is a Grade 2 listed property and in response to the current Covid-19 situation, the design involves the conversion of the existing house and the addition of an underground bunker. Conserving as much of the original house that remains, Adey has added contemporary features that are are sympathetic to the period style. In contrast, the design for the bunker is very modern. It is equipped with everything one would need to survive comfortably for up to six months. There are three ensuite bedrooms, a kitchen, living room, gym, games room / cinema, hydroponic farm and storage / maintenance rooms.
