“Cities are mutable and changeable sites constantly in flux and transition. The desire to freeze them, if even for a moment, is hard to resist.” These are the words of Susan Bright, author of Art Photography Now, describing the urban landscape. Amsterdam-based photographer Lotte Lisa Ekkel answers that call – slowing things down by creating interesting crops of buildings and pulling details into focus. Her compositions are graphic, painterly and precise. Natural light is “both her subject and guide,” bathing compositions in warmth and drawing attention to hidden textures. The following images show an orange glow emanating from behind glass panes; the sun casting deep shadows; and wires crossing in front of brick red façades. Ekkel is drawn to “in-between places” – staircases, windows and doorways – that signal a change of direction.
