Unrequited Love explores changes in mood and the psychological experience, in all its complexity and diversity. Throughout Rooney’s sketchbooks, she has developed this idea and translated it into her final garments through fabric, silhouettes and techniques. By manipulating fabric using tucks, puckers, and folds, she experimented with how these methods create tension and link to the feelings that people with mood swings may experience. She used soft fabrics and padded shapes to make the wearer feel secure and comfortable whilst wearing them. Padded garments imitate the feel of a duvet or a protective layer surrounding the wearer. Soft and smooth fabrics have a tactile quality; they feel nice to the touch and can be used for grounding by the person wearing it. By using materials such as faux fur, the wearer can be distracted from negative thoughts. The silhouettes also have an encasing, protective, which adds to the feelings of comfort and security.
