The Instability of the Image takes up the task of analysing the idea of representation in contemporary art. Including works from eight practitioners, the exhibition runs at Paradise Row from 19 July until 12 September. Curated by Attilia Fattori Franchini, the showcase features works from Sam Austen, Agnieszka Brzezanska, Ryan Foerster, Gabriel Hartley, Israel Lund, Marco Palmieri, Hannah Perry and Max Ruf, the showcase covers a variety of media.
Digital media has had an unprecedented impact on visual art and has transformed images into forms capable of questioning economic systems and power structures. The increase of products able to capture and examine the world has, in turn, contributed to the development of a new relationship between visual culture and materiality. The influence of perception, both personal and technological, has been altered, challenging the ways in which people view and portray their surroundings.
Through a variety of approaches, the artists examine representation, experimenting with sources, forms and techniques, utilising repetition, abstraction, velocity and fragmentation as artistic tools to escape realism while still leaning towards an embodiment of the world.
