According to Google trends, searches for “AI” peaked in March 2023. The surge came as OpenAI’s chatbot ChatGPT dominated headlines, and the art world grappled with tools like Midjourney and DALL-E 2. Sarah Meyohas (b. 1991) is a pioneering conceptual artist who investigates the complex technologies and automated systems governing the world. In 2015, five months before the launch of Ethereum, Meyohas minted the first Bitchcoin: a cryptocurrency-as-artwork recently acquired by Centre Pompidou. The Speculations series was conceived for this project; audiences could exchange tokens for photographs. These images “literally never end”: light bounces between mirrors in infinite tunnels and loops. Here, reflection is a metaphor for cultural and financial value. Meyohas’ first solo show with Marianne Boesky Gallery (16 May – 17 June) presents new works that utilise holographic and AI technologies.
