Sydney Contemporary, Carriageworks, Sydney

Australia’s international art fair, Sydney Contemporary, returns for four days from 10 September. For this, its second edition, the fair will present over 90 galleries from 13 different countries across the expansive interior of the Carriageworks; a large-scale multi-arts centre in Sydney’s Redfern Waterloo precinct, and host to Sydney Contemporary’s inauguration in 2013. Directed by Barry Keldoulis, this year sees an increase in the number of exhibitors, as well as a notable expansion in terms of additional projects taking place throughout the week.

Amongst the vast selection of international artists and respective institutions in attendance at the fair will be Edinburgh-based Ingleby Gallery‘s presentation of pieces by Richard Forster, Peter Liversidge, Jonathan Owen, Katie Paterson, Callum Innes and Ian Hamilton Finlay. Elsewhere, Mark Moore Gallery, Los-Angeles, will showcase a selection of striking moving image works by video artists Josh Azzarella and Allison Schulnik, and Singapore’s Future Perfect brings innovative sculpture and installation by Arin Rungjang and Nathan Coley to the city. Notable Australian pavilions to visit include Jan Murphy Gallery, Brisbane, representing Ben Quilty, Tolarno Galleries, Melbourne, with Brendan Huntley, and Sullivan+Strumpf featuring the work of Karen Black.

The 2015 edition sees a series of new events coordinated under the heading of Sydney Art Week; a lengthier celebration of contemporary art practices taking place across the entire city  from Monday 7 September until Sunday 13 September. Members of the public are encouraged to participate in a dynamic programme of free activities including performance art trails, ‘art and dine’ sessions at Sydney’s premier eateries, and late night art shows.

Other events include film screenings and the Talk Contemporary series of panel discussions, which boasts a long list of prominent names from different areas of the industry, including Pearl Lam, International Gallery Director; Tom Uglow, Creative Director of Google Creative Lab; and Sophie Tedmanson, Deputy Editor of Vogue Australia. The talks explore contemporary themes from gender in art, emerging technologies, and the process of creativity itself. Sydney Contemporary is the biggest of its kind in the Asia-Pacific region and promises to boost the creative presence of the region significantly this year.
