Monica Marshall

Monica Marshall’s practice revolves around the subconscious and the psyche, making sense of the difficulties of life through colour, text, distortion and characters. Through printmaking, drawing and painting, either on a large-scale or by creating multiple smaller works as part of an installation, Marshall layers pieces to convey the sense of being physically and mentally overloaded. In order to successfully offset darker subject matter, Marshall recognises that humour is a vital component, and enjoys playing with the juxtaposition of the serious and the absurd. One of the recurring motifs Marshall works with is how her Asperger Syndrome impacts her life, such as representing sensory issues and breaking down the stereotypes and stigma surrounding disability, and one of her accolades includes winning the Mark Bailey Prize as part of the 2019 Eleanor Worthington Prize.
