Jodie Bateman’s series challenges UK society to view Muslim women differently, by inviting the viewer into their private spaces. Bateman takes inspiration from historical paintings – known for their objectification of women – and posing models in such a way as to mimic the mannerisms whilst challenging conventions. The photographer notes: “This is an investigation into the experience of Muslim women from an autobiographical perspective. It is vital to listen to Muslim women’s voices, as they are often silenced and spoken for by men. Due to the lack of authentic voices, negative stereotypes are perpetuated.”
