As a designer, Georgina Nadin has developed a great interest in abandoned, dilapidated buildings and she aspires to delve deeper into building restoration, preservation and adaptive reuse. Her aim is to put these buildings back into the community, where they can be appreciated again. Derby’s Great Northern Railway Engine House was built between 1877 and 1878 by Kirk and Randall of Sleaford and currently lies abandoned at the side of Uttoxeter New road and Great Northern Road situated in Derby city centre. The Engine House itself is a Grade 2 listed property, which was listed on 5 September 1986 shortly after the Friar Gate Goods Yard. The Engine House is located on a busy main road in the centre of Derby, and in order to re-design it back into the community, it needed to have a purpose that was going to be used in the future. In the project, it has been redesigned into four high-end residential apartments, which consist of two garden apartments and two studio apartments. All these apartments have access to parking at the rear along with a reception area where visitors can wait or for owners’ deliveries.
