Emerging Perspectives

Opening for submissions on 12 June, Saatchi Gallery, London, is launching a new photography competition following on from the success of #SaatchiSelfie, which received over 14,000 entries earlier this year. #SelfExpression invites the public to submit smartphone images in a bid to gather works which move beyond the self and look to the world around them for inspiration. Supported by Huawei, the open-entry competition extends an ongoing platform for creative imagery taken through hand-held devices, encouraging populations to realise the potential of these new technologies as artistic tools. Important questions are asked: what is the relevance of a spontaneous snapshot as opposed to a planned piece of fine art? What is the future of photography? How is technology being integrated into contemporary practices? Nigel Hurst, CEO Saatchi Gallery, hopes the prize will inspire people to: “Document their daily lives with even more range, diversity and creative vigour.”

In addition to having their chosen composition displayed at the gallery, where it will be shared with an international audience, the 10 shortlisted artists will also receive Huawei’s newest P10 smartphone. The overall winner, announced on 19 July, will also be awarded a solo exhibition. #SelfExpression coincides with the news that the From Selfie to Self-Expression show has been extended until 23 July due to its popularity and poignant cultural relevance.
