Alice Horsley

Alice Horsley

Horsley’s body of work examines the way that dress codes are used as a form of oppression and control, as well as the effects of blame culture. The artist references photography, performance and film to incorporates multiple experiences and genders. The photos are largely self-portraits that investigate double standards, everyday sexism and acts of violence against the body and the self. In one series, she plays with photography of the female body as documentation that, through ingrained sexism, becomes objectification. Predominately, Horsley wants this collection to inspire conversation surrounding these rules and standards we are held by, as well as the idea that women particularly should be held responsible for not presenting themselves in certain ways.
