Samantha Murphy

Sam Murphy is a multidisciplinary artist predominantly working with ink, paint, collage and print. Her practice is research-driven, and is heavily informed by an ever-growing passion for feminist theory, literature, music and cinema. Helene Cixous’ essay, Laugh of the Medusa, and Clarissa Pinkola Estes’ Women Who Run With the Wolves are amongst some of the texts that have influenced Murphy’s practice. With an often spontaneous and whimsical approach, her work examines the raw emotions, desires and vulnerabilities that constitute womanhood. Vibrant colours express an outpouring of feeling. In recent projects, Murphy represents the concept of monstrous femininity through found nature imagery and poetry, with the intention of inspiring audiences to connect with, reclaim and embrace their own voice and emotions.
