Coral Sea Fan – Grown From Root
Coral Sea Fan – Grown From Root is an ongoing project exploring material science: the biological products and processes that are set to shape our world in the future. Grass seeds are cultivated in moulds carved from beeswax and take just 12 days to grow into structures that are 100% organic and compostable. Zena Holloway’s root sculptures and wearables build on both metaphor and reality: aim- ing to expose the beauty and vulnerability of corals to champion ocean conservation. Roots are the building blocks for plant life; corals the equivalent for sea life, making up less than one per cent of the ocean, but home to 25% of the world’s marine life.
