Still from What DID Happen to Alice? (2020).
Valerie Hird is a multimedia visual artist who lives and works between Vermont and New York in the USA, and the MENA region. Her work explores cultural mythologies and the roles they play in societal perception. She has spent years moving across cultures, listening and collecting stories, fascinated by the way some tales survive, transferred easily between illusion, reality, myth and metaphor. Lately Hird has began to explore her own type of “Biomythology” – digging into the uneasy intersection between published histories and personal memories, considering the popular literature, movies, news and social media that have influenced her decisions.
