Stephen Johnston

Portrait of Covid (2022).

Throne is part of an ongoing series exploring how chairs can embody portraits: of people, place, feelings, events and narratives. The subjects, painted using oils, are structured in a prism of minimalist isolation. In doing so, the artist concentrates focus, devoid from external influences, binding the subject with the viewer as part of a tense ideological dialogue. Stephen Johnston’s work is held in numerous private art collections around the world. He received early success winning The De Veres Art Award, the SIAP Award and The KPMG Young Artist Award. His work has since been acquired by the National Museum of Northern Ireland and Belfast City Council.
