Sam Crane dismantles the exclusionary structures of a retrograde cultural ecosystem, situating Shakespearean performance inside the notoriously violent and immensely popular game Grand Theft Auto. Crane’s work explores the dramatic, political and ethical implications of the interaction between performer and spectator, held inside the virtual realm. Crane is an actor and video artist whose work seeks to recontextualise the seemingly disparate cultural spheres of classical theatre and video games, merging them to challenge perceived positions in a supposed hierarchy of artistic expression. Crane assesses what constitutes “high” and “low” art.
