Luciana Abait

Agua

Los Angeles-based artist Luciana Abait creates photo-based manipulated landscapes that are at once surreal, barren and thought-provoking. Each piece addresses globalisation, climate change and displacement, as well as the complexities of cultural assimilation, often using water as a metaphor for rebirth that alludes to the natural world’s inherent possibilities for healing. Abait’s practice is informed by her own immigration history from South America into the US in the 1990s. She uses natural imagery such as mountains, icebergs and oceans along with flight plans, maps and human-made structures to act as metaphors for her personal experience.
