Two Small Blues
Jonathan Phillips makes small, sculptural ceramics. Initially, small stoneware vessels are thrown onto a potter’s wheel, using precisely proportioned geometric shapes which are then shaped by hand to produce a very fine wall. In doing so, Phillips creates a delicate boundary between a small, interior space and immeasurable space beyond it. Colour is developed from working with the inherent colour of fired stoneware clay. Each clay body is individually prepared, making slight modifications through the addition of natural pigments. These pieces are polished between kiln firings, to give a smooth, tactile surface, focused on intimacy and interconnection.
