John Lucy

Hypergesture (2021).

In Hypergesture, John Lucy examines the relationship between human and machine bodies through the language of performance and surgical robotics. Two custom robot arms perform a dance duet by moving light sources around a shared centre of motion – a common design feature of surgical robots. The constraint of movement echoes the spherical range of motion of the human body. The development process included real-time virtual simulations driven by motion capture data, questioning the relationship between the two robots as well as the robots and a human performer. The piece reduces gesture to its purest form: living geometry.
