Gillian Hyland

Isis (2020).

Turas, which means “journey” in Irish, explores strength in femininity, drawing on the notion of the warrior. For this, Hyland interviewed women cancer survivors, asking them to describe what femininity, strength and courage meant to them. The series includes survivors – women who have fought and won against breast cancer – who hold a whole story in their gaze. Gillian Hyland’s photographs are steeped in narrative. Frozen in time, the images enter into subjects’ memories, visualising isolated yet deeply human moments. Stylised staging, colour and lighting come together to create cinematic scenes that tap into psychological landscapes.
