A mnemonic device, or memory device, is any learning technique that aids information retention or retrieval in the human memory for better understanding. Doreen Chua explores the mnemonic capacity for lines, especially in the sphere of social connection. Her art practice had evolved through adopting ideas from Asemic text – devoid of semantics, offering a “vacuum” of meaning. From here, she questions the very idea of what a text can be, and investigates the myriad materiality of writing implements and their role in offering diverse narratives. Her research interest lies in esoteric communication, and draws inspiration from living encounters.
