Before the Waterfall
Diana Cheren Nygren is a photo-based artist interested in the ways people understand – or misunderstand – themselves and their relationships both to each other, and to the world around them. Her images exploit the ability of photography to give concrete form to ideas, questioning the notion of images as documentation and the power of images to assert authority. In doing so, she offers an alternate vision of family, future and possibility. Rooted in a conviction that visual culture both shapes and influences global social change, her work addresses pertinent questions through a blend of documentary practice, invention and humour.
