Music of the Spheres
These paintings are the result of an ongoing inquiry into what a painting is, and what it can be – how tradition can be reinvented and definitions pushed to their limits. Examining where a painting begins and ends in space, Deborah Salt works with the mutability of edges. She builds up monochromatic paint on the canvas sides, white on the front, so that the colour glows on the wall as variations of light. Salt works with various permutations of angles to hang the work, covertly maintaining a “stable” horizontal or vertical line to the floor within each painting. A numinous environment is created as the paintings seem to dance in their own luminescence.
