Through analogue photography and a formal style, Craig Waddell alludes to traditional techniques and aesthetics whilst investigating contemporary queer narratives, establishing their visibility in social history. My portraits interrogate the contemporary masculine identity, outside of the heteronormative and hegemonic ideal. Shot in the sitters’ homes, these images attempt to queer the formal portrait, reclaiming it from outdated associations with social power and gender stereotyping.
