Fine art photography gallery LUMAS has announced an exclusive event showcasing limited editions of iconic works by the foremost fashion photographers of the 21st century, which will introduce previously unreleased masterpieces to the public. The gallery will be premièring 10 new works, including Edward Steichen’s legendary portrait of actress Gloria Swanson.
Edward Steichen had a career spanning decades thanks to his attentiveness coupled with painterly training and was a pioneer of fashion photography. Overtime the photogrpher’s 1924 portrait has gained the status of iconic masterpiece has elements of turn-of-the-century pictorialism combined with the modernist boldness which the photographer became known for.
Photographs of fashion icons including Bert Stern’s picture of supermodel Twiggy aand Arthur Elgort’s photographs of Kate Moss. Elgort’s beach-inspired images were shot for Vogue in 1995, capturing the carefree exuberance of summer days, and have rarely been seen since. H P. Horst’s black-and-white images of fashion designer Coco Chanel can also be found among the new works, supplementing the LUMAS Vogue Collection. The photographer worked with Chanel over three decades. Horst is best known for his 1939 photo The Mainbocher Corset, which has regularly been cited as inspiring designers such as Donna Karen with its timeless beauty.
Work by Erwin Blumenfield and George Hoyningen-Huene- names synonymous with iconic moments in the history of photography- will also feature in the collection. LUMAS released this extraordinary collection just a few weeks ago, with over 30 works by some of the world’s most distinguished fashion photographers. The exhibition will be touring throughout Europe before its arrival in London, and will be launched on 25 March. There will also be an exclusive preview at LUMAS flagship London gallery on South Molton Street. This event will include a keynote speech by Jo Ellison, Fashion editor of the Financial Times, former Features Director of British Vogue and author of Vogue: The Gown.
