Exploring Performativity
Cindy Sherman is one of the most influential figures in contemporary art. Questioning the representation of women in the media, the artist adopts multiple personae that uncover the performative nature of identity in the contemporary world. A new show at Sprüth Magers, London, offers her most recent body of work, in which Sherman positions herself as a cast of “grandes dames” from the Golden Age of 1920s Hollywood cinema.
