Call for Entries: New Designers

Sailor Jerry is on the search for new talent in Glasgow. Artists based in the city have the opportunity to feature in the April / May edition of Aesthetica Magazine and have their work displayed on the walls of Jerry’s Open House, a new event space in the heart of Glasgow.

Norman “Sailor Jerry” Collins is a renowned figure in traditional tattooing, using bold prints and colours – drawn from a variety of influences and life experiences – to create truly iconic designs. Every piece, or “flash” is a personal statement, but there are certain common meanings; such as snakes symbolising protection from misfortune and panthers representing ferocity and masculinity. (Check out more examples here). They should be inspired by these types of flash art; however, they should submit something original.

The top five entrants will be shortlisted by acclaimed artist and Glasgow School of Art alumni Peter Rossi, an artist born just outside Glasgow, with over 11 years of experience and over 30 international awards including Graphis Design Annual, New York, and press in Creative Review. The pieces will be transferred onto a denim jacket which will be exhibited at the Open House until 15 March.

The Brief: Demonstrate your take on a Norman “Sailor Jerry” Collins design.

The Prize: Winners will spend a day at Jerry’s Open House transferring your design onto a denim jacket, as well as displaying the work in the venue. A feature will also be included in the upcoming issue of Aesthetica, to be published on 1 April.

Deadline: 13 February. As the deadline is soon, designs don’t have to be perfect! To enter, submit a design of any medium to enter@jerrysopenhouse.com.
