Joanna Cummings

This project’s goal is to design a community space specifically to provide ongoing opportunity for groups of people to come together with a common purpose. Morecambe Bay, a seaside town close to where Joanna Cummings is from, is an area suffering from unemployment and poverty. The project was designed to benefit the community and provide a place for them to gather, but it must be somewhere with a purpose. The outcome is simple; to make change for the better. After visiting Morecambe Food Bank, which is currently in a church hall shared with three other groups, Cummings had a vision for what would attract the local residents. The centre is designed to be a welcoming space for the community in and around Morecambe. It is the centre point for the food bank, but visitors are not asked to leave once they collect their food packages. The centre provides respite for those who have had to travel, people can stay for a cup of tea, a meal, to sit and read, chat, or watch their children play. This is a community café serving meals made from fresh produce that normally would have been thrown away from supermarkets and surplus donations from the food bank that are nearing their use by date. After much research, in and around Morecambe, the design incorporates stylistic features reminiscent of the local area to better integrate the design with the users of the centre.
