Gemma Singleton

Tokyo to Kyoto evokes the ideas of biophilic design – a concept used within the building industry to increase occupant connectivity to the natural environment through the direct or indirect incorporation of organic forms. Singleton explores if and how visuals can replicate the experience of a bio-organic world, through the duplication of plantlife or bodies of water. Her work has also been inspired by travels through Japan, taking inspiration from a range of sources: from fish markets to contemporary architecture. The resulting pieces begin with intricate ink drawings that are then translated into digital designs, before heading to a print room for silk-screens in multiple layers, including an array of colours and forms that stimulate the viewer.
