Sasha Bykova

Sasha Bykova

Sasha Bykova is interested in the role of pleasure: how we navigate and experience it within our everyday lives, from the simplicity of textures to the wider appreciation and internalisation of aesthetics. She creates three-dimensional paintings that capture the states of flow and spontaneity, evoking a sense of freedom through their tangibility. As a multidisciplinary artist, Bykova creates tactile surfaces through which unexpected connections can be made. She asks audiences to engage with the works through their various physical elements: welcoming a range of emotions and reactions, from humour and sadness to exposure and secrecy. A sense of ambiguity is articulated through the use of materials, as the elements are allowed for a continuous flow of movement and repetition. Bykova primarily uses glue, ultra-light clay and spray paint, as well as some unconventional materials such as lipstick and found objects. Bykova’s work celebrates life in all its complexity – moving from the small, everyday appreciation of different textures, up to the experience of the physical self and what it means to interact with the body.
