Madeleine Hoyle

Madeleine Hoyle’s distorted bodies series is inspired by 19th century corset designs and contemporary gender studies. The bodies are not necessarily specific to gender – they are distorted in a way that’s relative to the form, hiding sexual organs and drawing inwards. Each of the works explores the relationship between the body and modern criticism. Her drawings are based on previous observational works taken from life drawing, subsequently abstracting the idea of what the human form can express. Working in delicate watercolour and coloured pencil on brown packaging paper, brings out flesh hues and skin tones.
