Hope Mitchell-Graham

Hope Mitchell-Graham

Hope Mitchell-Graham’s work focuses on her identity as a woman and how this intersects with a new identity as a disabled person. A keen interest in domestic crafts and the devaluation of these forms of art has fuelled Mitchell-Graham’s practice, which includes a wide variety of so-called “women’s crafts”, such as embroidery, sewing, knitting, crocheting and cross-stitching. She uses the feeling of intimacy and closeness evoked by the familiarity of everyday home comfort items – such as quilts, blankets and cushions – to draw the viewer in, leading them to read more confrontational quotes and statements. A contrast between comfort and discomfort is the primary focus.
