Luciano Pinheiro is a Brazilian multidisciplinary artist who is currently studying for an MA in Textile Fibres at the University of São Paulo. His artistic practice explores contemporary social and environmental issues through the use of natural, local materials and pigments.
The current series – A Favela Resiste! – is a representation of the favela as a place of exclusion and resistance. The construction of the large-scale work itself is key for Pinheiro, who notes: “The fabric pieces are cut and assembled in a tight, crowded manner, to create a sinuous structure, as a reference to the favela’s complexity. Everything is fragile and precarious due to lack of an inclusive policy.”
