With the Aesthetica Art Prize call for entries deadline on 31 August 2014, we look in depth at the work of longlisted artists from the latest edition. Anyes Galleani is an Italian-born, Los Angeles based visual artist that uses photo montage and collage to create unique images and paintings.
A former fashion photographer turned digital artist, Anyes started working with mixed media in 2011, while looking for a more organic way to display her images than conventional printing methods. With subjects ranging from women portraits to cityscapes and abstracts, her art reflects both her keen sense for beauty and her fascination with urban and industrial decay. Anyes recently participated in a group show at the Bustamante Gill gallery in Culver City and is now working on two new series of mixed media paintings for two solo shows later this year.
Father and Daughter selected for the Art Prize is part of a series inspired by physical resemblances and emotional connections. It was created using a self-portrait taken when Galleani was 15 and a picture of her father taken when he was 18, which were digitally assembled with the last letter Galleani’s father wrote to her. The images were printed on parchment and separately collaged on a wood panel, with an added paint drip. This photo montage is inspired by the appearance of weathered posters on walls of old buildings, recreating a sense of history and nostalgia.
