The Aesthetica Art Prize features 100 contemporary artists from across the world, offering emerging and established practitioners the opportunity to showcase their work to a wider audience. Now in its tenth year, the award celebrates excellence in art, spanning photography, painting, drawing, installation, sculpture, artists’ film and performance. It aspires to highlight work that challenges its own genre and provokes debate around its form and function.
Longlisted for the Aesthetica Art Prize 2016, Lam Pok Yin Jeff and Chong Ng are artists living in Shanghai and Singapore, who work with sculptural objects, installations and performances, which deal with the ontological nature of the photographic medium. The duo’s practice is heavily process-oriented, with an interest in how narratives and meanings are generated in the making of the image. In their artwork, the photographic apparatus – the act and process of photographing – as well as the circulation of images, are taken apart from within, through the artists’ creation of their own photographic devices and image-making methodologies.
The Untimely Apparatus of Two Amateur Photographers is an attempt to deconstruct and rethink the fundamental elements of photography, looking at the apparatus, methodologies and the image-making process through the hands of two amateur photographers. By means of staged performances and elaborate processes, presupposed ideas surrounding photography are taken to the extreme until they fall apart, while obsolete technologies and everyday objects are reinvented and radicalised. As the camera operators, Jeff and Ng seem to be demonstrating the correct use of the apparatus, when actually, they are hacking these devices, violating their original uses, and making them serve a new purpose. This project is featured in this year’s Aesthetica Art Prize Anthology Future Now, which is available online.
