Ran Bi

Brian Bi is a Chinese artist born in Beijing, currently based in London. As a millennial, he is interested in the world as constructed by images. Photograph Photograph is a body of work that explores the relationship between materiality and photography. “Images always need to be attached to a surface to be visually perceived,” the artist notes. “In the practice of contemporary art photography, the content and materialisation of photographs constructs the way we perceive the work and its meaning.” The body of work is three appropriations of existing photographs. They are taken out of their original physical context and placed into a new state: an online exhibition. The intention is to transform virtual viewing into an interactive behaviour. This can be seen as an attempt to extend perception, as well as a rumination on the act of viewing in a time of dematerialisation.
