A woman who began photographing the landscapes of race circuits in a bid to deal with the potential dangers being faced by her racing-driver son is to have her work shown as part of a major postgraduate art and design exposition at Nottingham Trent University.
Fine artist Lindsay Jelley will join more than 100 Masters students presenting their innovative and groundbreaking projects at Inside Out “ the School of Art and Design' biggest and best MA Expo yet.
Work “ by postgraduate students from almost 20 countries and spanning subjects including fine art, graphic design, product design, fashion, knitwear and textiles “ will be on show from July 12 and 14-19 in the university's Bonington building, a state-of-the-art centre for creativity.
Lindsay has produced a striking collection of images taken across the world, showing race circuit scenes in intricate detail. Shots include close-ups of track surfaces, bundles of new and used tyres, empty stands, and various car parts such as engines and nosecones. She turned to photography as a means of focusing her mind elsewhere as her son Stephen drove at high speeds and in often treacherous conditions in the British F3 International Series, GP2 Asia and currently for Team RAC in the British Touring Car Championships.
Lindsay, who has also produced paintings and videos as part of her project, said: “Working in such an emotional environment, and in a state of tension, has been a real challenge. But the process has helped to put my mind in another place on race days and enabled me to cope with the nerves of watching my son compete. I wanted to show the landscape of a racing circuit as one of extremes – from calm, quiet and beauty to noise, tension and competition.â€
MA Fashion Design student, Yutaka Sotome, meanwhile, has produced a collection of street clothes which he has combined with his own animation and graffiti art designs. The collection, which he has dubbed a ‘Sub-cultural Hardcore Mixx’, aims to reflect military, workwear, sportswear and tailoring, with an emphasis on pattern cutting and details.
Other work includes a study of memories, people, emotions and cultures made into bespoke textile prints using designs, forms and colours; and a photography project exploring the personal, emotional and intimate spaces inhabited by British soldiers on an Army barracks in Germany.
Another student has examined issues associated with launching a new sports brand to teenagers such as naming, styling and product range; while another has designed clothing inspired by the shape and texture of modern sculpture.
Academic Team Leader for Masters Programmes in Nottingham Trent University’s School of Art and Design, Carol Jones, said: “This innovative and diverse exhibition showcases the extensive collaborative, cultural and international influences that are intrinsic to the School’s vibrant postgraduate art and design community. It is part of our aim to produce confident, articulate, reflective, contextualised and world-aware global design citizens.â€
Inside Out will be open from July 12 and July 14-19 from 10am to 4pm daily. A private view will take place on Friday July 11 from 6-8pm in the university's Bonington building.

His unique pieces have an original style, which are characterised by both skill and concept. He creates narratives with reference to popular culture, visually interpreting some of our most identifiable icons. Whether depicting a seemingly mundane object, or the glamour of celebrity, the fusion of striking colour with intriguing texture is symbolic of Jonathan's work. In Jonathan's words, "I look for relevant references which have remained in our consciousness."

There is an unspoken aura of anxiousness that permeates modern society: newspaper headlines and 24 hour TV news bulletins report on what appears to be an almost constant, but unspecific, terrorist threat, with governments issuing ever-escalating warning levels, all the time encouraging us to be vigilant. However, within the context of the attacks on the World Trade Centre, and the London Tube bombing, there are whispered conspiracies that the US Government (particularly with the PATRIOT Act) and the British Government are engendering a feeling of fear within the general populace to better able them to control their respective citizens.
Just world order is an exhibition of works in a variety of media by 8 artists (2 working in collaboration) that will examine the feeling of angst in modern living and the disquiet we often feel in attempting to find our place and fit in, and how we identify ourselves in relation to others and the places we live. The title Just world order comes from a lecture by Austrian philosopher Hans Kochler entitled Karol Wojty_a's Notion of the Irreducible in Man and the Quest for a Just world order. Kochler has long worked on the philosophical notion of international relations and is president of the International Progress Organisation.
The exhibition will feature works that embrace displacement, both physical and mental (the latter particularly evident in the deliberately ambiguous title Just world order) and will touch upon aspiration and belonging in human endeavour. There will be no distinct conclusion, but rather an opportunity for discussion within the gallery setting: in essence, the gallery will become an 'empty vessel' for the visitor to explore and play out their fears with regards to modern living and to potentially excise them. Displacement and disorientation are indicative indicators of anxiety within modern society, but embracing, experiencing and understanding what motivates us to fashion such a modern world can, within the context of Just world order, become a wholly cathartic experience.

Gallery Talk: Rachel Garfield in Conversation with Rebecca Ayre
Saturday 9 August 2008 at 2pm
News of global warming, world conflicts, immigration, and food shortages has encouraged a growth of anxiety in the modern world. In recent years there has also been an enhanced consciousness of the past from within popular culture, particularly of the lived past, or the last one hundred years. Identity, anxiety and belonging are distinct themes in Just world order.
ArtSway presents a talk with featured Just world order artist and writer Rachel Garfield to discuss how identity is expressed in contemporary art through the exploration of history and memory. Rachel will be discussing her work ‘Deep England’, and her practice and research with former ArtSway intern Rebecca Ayre. Rebecca is a photographer and artist with a particular interest in memory, commemoration and nostalgia in contemporary cultures.

Hypocrite's Lament & The Drain Of Progress
by
Zander Blom and Julia Rosa Clark
OPENS 09 JULY 18.00 - 21.00
RUNS UNTIL 26 JULY
FERREIRA PROJECTS in association with WHATIFTHEWORLD / GALLERY are proud to present Hypocrite's Lament & The Drain Of Progress, a collaborative exhibition by highly acclaimed emerging South African Artists, Zander Blom and Julia Rosa Clark. The exhibition consists of Zander Blom's celebrated body of work, The Drain Of Progress, which was recently recognized by Frieze Magazine as one of the most internationally significant solo exhibitions of 2007, and Julia Rosa Clark's Hypocrites Lament, SA Critics Choice Award winner for 2007.
Remnants are a significant theme in the work of both Zander Blom and Julia Rosa Clark, although they approach the concept in ways that are as varied as they are similar. It is the remnants of art, of modernism, of culture and of objects that provide the spine of these artists’ work. It is an important concept too, in the life of a young South African artist where remnants (political, economic and social) from a dismal, brutal and segregated past are their daily bread.
These remnants have been reconfigured as installations by both artists to create new bodies of work, The Drain of Progress in Zander Blom's case and Hypocrite's Lament in Julia Rosa Clark's instance. Blom's large-scale photographs and publication document a house he lived in for four years, and the installation that evolved there over that time. Taking both a fascination and distrust of Modernism and its art as a starting point, and a nihilist and ironic bearing, he began making abstract monochrome ink drawings. As he tried to empty his art of representation, an act which acknowledges the goal of Modernist abstraction as well as the impossibility of achieving it, the drawings began to slide off the paper, and onto the walls. Old drawings were cut up and reassembled, taped into jagged landscapes on the ceiling. Formalist constructions were made out of vinyl tape, and parodies of Mondrian and Schwitters crept up the corners. Areas were worked and reworked, in a progression emulating the development of Modernism, each movement eating the one before. He meticulously documented the evolution of the installation process with photographs that eventually form the work itself. Appropriately, these make a portal for an audience to enter the work, similar to the way that South Africans and Blom himself (outside of the major centres of Western art) accessed Modernist art.
Julia Rosa Clark's installation Hypocrite's Lament is on the surface far more comfortable with objects and representation. It is a panoply of images, colours, textures and things. Old thrift store paintings weep neon string, images from children's text books tangled up in them. A miniature Christmas tree spawns a line of presents, growing exponentially into the grotesque. A pillar composed of porcelain trinkets casts a dreadful and dark shadow, while the walls are lined with hundreds of food images, whirling into a hurricane. A collection of newspaper clippings forewarn of earth’s imminent doom. Underneath this bright display is a terrible fear, of images and of objects, and what their profusion signifies in a world always on the brink of disaster. This, of course, makes her the hypocrite of the title, for she clearly loves objects, and indeed is actively as an artist involved in creating more.
Dilemmas, torn loyalties and nihilism continually face off against the positive act of creation for both these artists. This tension, whether a suspicion of the past or a fear of the future, situates Julia Rosa Clark and Zander Blom thoroughly in the present moment.
WHATIFTHEWORLD / GALLERY was selected by Contemporary Magazine as one of the top 50 emerging galleries from around the world in 2007.

A series of 10 art events to take place every Thursday evening for 10 weeks
Conceived as individually created events, each night has a life of its own, an evening at a time. Each night is dedicated to a hand-picked curator, selected on the quality of their past work and the inspiration of their proposal. Given carte blanche, the curators are given the Louise Blouin Institute as a three-dimensional blank canvas through which they are free to intervene. Each event acts as a glimpse of the curators’ chosen universe and a facet of the ART AFTER DARK 10 x 10 Summer Project.
ART AFTER DARK is a unique opportunity for the curators to bridge disciplines, merging talent and combining creativity. Projects include sound, light and video installations and the performing arts.
As a relatively new space, the Institute is excited to open its doors to the first of our 10 x 10 Summer Projects. We look forward to welcoming, amongst Brooke Lynn McGowan, Ben Austin, Flora Fairbairn, Caroline Kassar, Guillaume Breton, Jonathan Barnett, Paula Naughton + Greg Poole + Mark Melvin, Victoria Ionina and more surprised guests yet to be confirmed.

Moor Music Festival is a small and beautifully formed weekend party filled with creativity, music, mayhem, great food and drink (not at rip off prices!) and enjoys a truly unique atmosphere.
Put together by a group of friends who've come from a background of some of the great woodland, wasteland and wildland parties held throughout North Yorkshire over the past fifteen years, the festival is run independently and without sponsorship.
So come along, meet friends and make friends at what is coming to be known as the good vibed reunion weekender for people in the north and beyond.
Imagine a village fete with a twist, wild camping with benefits or your eccentric aunt's parties in the seventies and you'll be just about there.
But don't take our word for it, jump in... the water's lovely.

Already acclaimed by critics internationally for his challenging curated projects, this time Semple will take the concept of appropriation, and the re-articulation of mass culture to the heart of the system.
Featuring 5 of the UK's most fascinating young artists, this show promises more than just a bright and glossy homage to
pop, but an interesting insight into how a new generation make sense of the complexities of mass culture. The private view will also be feature a live performance and interactive music video shoot by top 20 band Subliminal Girls.
This generation is unique in as much as it's the last generation that will remember life before the home computer, mobile
phone, music video, mass marketing and instant archive that is the Internet. The last generation that could recall such
dramatic changes was that of their great grandparents who remembered life before the airplane, telephone and space
travel.
"˜Mash-Ups"will be held at the Design and Artists Copyright Society's Kowalsky Gallery. Each year DACS collects and
pays millions of pounds worth of royalties to artists. They represent over 52,000 UK and international artists including some of the biggest names in contemporary visual arts.

The Unloved Vs Jericho 1: Portraits
Welcome to the long-overdue collaborative mash-up of two established East Midlands artists “ Koo Bhangra (The Unloved) and Chris Denner (Jericho 1) who have come together for the first time to combine cutting-edge photography with graphic illustration.
This self-initiated, mixed media exhibition which is sponsored by PG1 London, is their artistic interpretation of conventional portraiture. Graphic illustration was then added, inspired by authentic harlequin designs from the 15th century. These fancifully designs, varied in colour and decoration fit beautifully with the illustrative geometric shapes that were added over the actual photographic images, allowing Bhangra and Denner the creative freedom to test the boundaries of their prospective artforms and in so doing, create limited edition pieces which are already being hailed as future classics.
For the artists, who are both residents of Leicester’s Creative Business Depot, this exhibition is an opportunity to raise the profile of the creative industries in the region and offer audiences a new perspective on traditional portraiture.
Bhangra, whose current client list includes the likes of computer software giant Adobe, says: "As a graphic designer by trade, The Unloved vs. Jericho 1 is an opportunity to work on something where I have real creative freedom “ no client briefs to work to - the only boundaries are the limits of our imagination. It is in this environment that the most creative and unexpected results occur“ and this first project has given us so many ideas for future collaborations across artforms. I can just see this thing running and running."

Mummery + Schnelle are pleased to announce the first exhibition in London of the work of Michael Muller.
Muller's art is based on linguistic, numeric, stella, or solar systems, which, although they have some basis in empirical reality are almost always invented by the artist himself. Best known for his drawings and written work, Muller is constantly expanding his means of expression, which now incorporate sculpture, installation and painting. If there can be said to be a general theme for his work, then it is translation.

INTERCOM
10th October - 1st November
Private view 10th October 7-9pm
We are pleased to present the latest solo exhibition by Swedish artist Johanna H¤llsten.
INTERCOM continues H¤llsten's interests in translation, mediation and duration. Through two installations, different aspects of interaction occurring within dialogues will be explored.
The first installation situated within the window will be exploring notions of translation and mediation within the structure of a dialogue, together with the impossible task of inter-species communication.
During the private view the installation in the gallery will be interactive and the one-sided aspects of the PA system will be questioned and altered, becoming a direct dialogue between it and the audience.

Portraits by artists including the leading impressionist painter Dame Laura Knight are being given a contemporary makeover by Nottingham Trent University students. Drawing inspiration from a collection of paintings, the School of Art and Design Masters students are combining new, second-hand and vintage garments and accessories to style a series of looks which reflect the portraits.
They have created a range of reconstructed images for the Styling Project I exhibition, which will be on show in the Long Gallery at Nottingham Castle from July 19-28. The work is part of an ongoing partnership between the School of Art and Design and Nottingham City Museums and Galleries, using archive material and museum collections to create innovative styles for the fashion market.
The project ties in with the major Laura Knight at the Theatre exhibition, which runs from July 19 to September 28 at Nottingham Castle. The students have picked up on the drama and dressing-up themes of this exhibition, which shows the artists paintings and drawings of the ballet and the stage.
A private view will be held for Styling Project I and Laura Knight at the Theatre on July 18, which will be officially opened by the university's Head of College of Art & Design and the Built Environment, Professor Simon Lewis.

For the first time iconic artist Jamie Reid is presenting an exciting new body of works on glass at THE AQUARIUM L-13 gallery.
Sex Pistols' ˜Never Mind the Bollocks' album cover artist Jamie Reid has been working with glass for the first time; his unique and intensely coloured glass pieces, the result of a collaboration with Melt Design, will be on show at THE AQUARIUM L-13 gallery in August.
The works will be displayed in a specially created environment alongside a series of new paintings of similarly vibrant intensity. Although better known for his agit-prop and design work, Reid has also created over the years a staggering body of work that explores his more esoteric, abstract and spiritual concerns. Highly coloured with an deeply charged beauty, these universal works lend themselves to glass perfectly, unveiling layers upon layers of new magical realms.
A signing event with Jamie Reid will be held at the aquarium L-13 on the 13th of September
